Burps. They're not just for babies. Even adults need to get rid of some of the air we swallow when we eat. If babies aren't burped frequently, too much swallowed air can lead to spitting up, crankiness, and gassiness. One of the most important parts of baby's meal is the burping that takes place during and after chow time. There are a few ways to accomplish this, and it doesn't hurt for everyone to know how to do it. You never know when a newborn will become part of the family. Here's how: First, to protect your clothes put a clean towel, cloth diaper, receiving blanket or burp cloth over your shoulder or wherever your baby's head will rest. Then position the baby's head over one shoulder with his stomach against your chest and his head resting on your shoulder. Gently pat baby on the back and rub it in a circular motion until he burps. Please be patient. Sometimes it takes a while. Other methods include the "bulldoggy" burp, when you place one hand across baby's chest, supporting her chin with your thumb and index finger. Lean baby across that support hand and pat or rub her back with your free hand. For "lap burp," position yourself so you comfortably place baby's head on one thigh and his stomach on the other. Using an upward and circular motion, gently pat the baby's back until he burps. You can even get some exercise by walking and burping baby. Stand up and place your arm under the baby’s rib cage with her back to your chest. Walk slowly, leaning the baby over your arm until she burps. Oh, and don't expect baby to say "excuse me!"
